Wesley Charles I, *18 December 1707 Epworth, †29 March 1788 London, English theologian, younger brother of John. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church College, Oxford (classical languages and literature). After graduating, he was ordained a priest in 1735. In 1749, he married and moved to Bristol; he settled in St. Marylebone, London in 1771. He became famous as the author of hymn texts (over 8,000 are attributed to him) and “sung sermons,” in which he used melodies by H. Carey and H.
