Frey Emil, *8 April 1889 Baden (Aargau), †20 May 1946 Zurich, Swiss pianist, composer, and teacher. He studied under R. Freund in Zurich, J. Lauber, W. Rehberg, and O. Barblan in Geneva, and with G. Fauré, L. Diémer, and Ch. Widor at the conservatory in Paris, where he was awarded first prize in 1906. In 1910, he received the international Anton Rubinstein Prize (honorary diploma) for piano performance and the grand prize in composition for his Piano Trio. From 1907 to 1912, he was active as a pianist in Berlin; from 1912 to 1917, he was a professor at the conservatory in Moscow. In 1918, he returned to Zurich, where in 1922 he took charge of a master piano class. At the same time, he maintained an active concert career. In 1937, he served as a juror at the 3rd International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. He composed in the style of late Romanticism.
