Chmielowska, Wanda (EN)

Biography

Chmielowska Wanda, née Szlezynger, *2 October 1891 St. Petersburg, †19 January 1980 Tychy, Polish pianist and teacher. She studied at the conservatory in St. Petersburg under A. Yesipova (diploma – 1911), and from 1918 in Warsaw under H. Melcer, while simultaneously teaching piano. From 1924 she taught in Katowice at the S.M. Stoiński Music Institute, and from 1929 at the newly established State Conservatory of Music. During the war she gave piano lessons in Warsaw. In 1945–70 she was a professor at the State Higher School of Music (PWSM) in Katowice; in 1947–48 she served as vice-rector of that institution, and from 1957 as head of the Piano Department. Her students included L. Grychtołówna, J. Stompel, and others. She also conducted courses in piano pedagogy for teachers and published several works in this field; she issued a small, popular collection of her own piano compositions for beginners, Światek dziecięcy (“Children’s World”). In 1954 she was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
