Biography and Literature

Sennewald Gustaw Adolf, *26 January 1804 Bielsko, †16 July 1860 Warsaw, Polish bookseller and publisher. He completed an apprenticeship in A. Brzezina’s bookstore and music store in Warsaw. In 1828, he became a partner (A. Brzezina et Comp.) and in 1832 the owner of the company, which he ran under his own name at ul. Miodowa 481 (from 1858 no. 2, from 1871 no. 4 and from 1887 no. 6). He developed the publishing business of books in various fields and sheet music, printed in his own lithographic workshop (until August 1838) and in other printing houses in Warsaw and abroad. In 1840–58, he also ran a book rental, and from 1842 a sheet music rental. In the field of sheet music publishing, the company became one of the largest in the Kingdom of Poland, publishing works by Polish and foreign authors, including textbooks (J. Elsner Szkoła śpiewu, 1834, 2nd ed. 1855, J. Niedzielski Szkoła na flecik polski, 1832, 2nd ed. 1836, I.F. Dobrzyński Szkoła na fortepian, 1845, K. Kurpiński Zasady muzyki na pianoforte, 3rd ed. 1835), opera songs and arias, piano, church and dance pieces, fragments of operas for piano or voice with piano (S . Moniuszko Flis, 1858, Jawnuta, 1860, Verbum nobile, 1860/61), publishing series (“Zbiór ulubionych tańców warszawskich na fortepiano” 1856–57, “Zbiór ulubionych śpiewów ułożonych na mezzo-sopran…” 1858–approx. 1865). G.A. Sennewald published catalogues of his own publications (1839, 1847, 1858) and “Katalog nut znajdujących się do abonamentu…” (1842). By 1850, he published approximately 600 pieces of sheet music.
