Biography and Literature

Sennewald Gustaw Karol, *9 April 1832 Warsaw, †11 March 1896 Warsaw, Polish bookseller and publisher, son of Gustav Adolf. He practised in his father’s company, which he took over in 1860. He continued publishing books in various fields, and especially developed music editing, publishing compositions by I.F. Dobrzyński (including Characteristic Symphony for piano for 4 hands, 1862), S. Moniuszko (including the first edition of the song Macierzanka, 1861, 6 songs from the cycle Swan Song, 1873, Zamek na Czorsztynie. Wspomnienie z opery K. Kurpińskiego for piano, 1862 and Sabaudka overture for piano for 4 hands, 1882), I. Komorowski, songs and Methode de chant pour le voise de soprano et mezzo-soprano (1865) by his brother-in-law W. Troschl, songs by A. Zarzycki (2 Songbooks for voice and piano, 1871, 1873), W. Żeleński and other Polish and foreign composers. He often included popular pieces, songs, arias and miniatures in publishing series: “Foreign Songs for mezzo-soprano” from 1861, “Collection of favourite songs arranged for alto” from 1862, “Lira” from 1862, “Euterpe” from 1865, “Pearls and Flowers” from 1878, “Perles Harmonique” from 1880, “Kłosy z Nasza i Obcej Niwy” from 1895. He published catalogues (1862, 1866, 1868) and a catalogue of musical prints (1875). He was one of the co-founders of WTM (1871) and was treasurer of the board for two years. In 1873–88, he worked in the Spółka Wydawnicza Księgarzy, established together with five other Warsaw editors. He took part in the general exhibition in Vienna (1873) and in Chicago (1894), where he received a medal and a diploma for books and sheet music publications.
