Ries, Hubert (EN)

Biography

Ries Hubert, *1 April 1802 Bonn, †14 September 1886 Berlin, German violinist and composer, son of Franz Anton. He studied violin playing, among others, at L. Spohr, and composition at M. Hauptmann. From 1824, he lived in Berlin, where initially he worked as a violinist in various orchestras, and later also as a soloist and conductor. From 1835 he headed the Philharmonische Gesellschaft in Berlin, and in 1839, he became a member of the Akademie der Künste there. He developed his teaching activities and published the valued and repeatedly reissued textbook Violinschule für den ersten Unterricht (Leipzig 1840). He composed two violin concertos and numerous small pieces for violin (duets, etudes).
