Biography

Hannikainen Arvo Sakari, *11 October 1897 Jyväskylä, †8 January 1942 Helsinki, Finnish violinist and conductor, son of Pekka. In 1915–17, he studied violin in Helsinki, where he then became a member of the symphony orchestra. In 1920–23, he continued his violin studies in Berlin and Weimar, and in later years in Paris with J. Thibaud and E. Ÿsaÿe. He made his debut as a soloist in 1920 in Helsinki. In 1923–42, he was concertmaster of the Helsinki Symphony Orchestra, and there, in 1926–42, he was a professor of violin and chamber music at the J. Sibelius Academy of Music and led the student symphony orchestra. Together with his brothers Ilmari and Tauno, he performed in the Hannikainen Trio. His wife Mary (1901–1974) was a singer (soprano), performing first in operetta and later song repertoire in Scandinavian countries and Germany.
