Tarnowski, Aleksander (EN)

Biography

Tarnowski Aleksander, *6 January 1822 Warsaw, †3 June 1882 Warsaw, Polish dancer. He was a dancer since 1842 and the first dancer of the Warsaw Theatre Directorate in 1844–57. He was a partner of M. Taglioni (1844) and C. Grisi (1853) at their performances in Warsaw. After a break due to mental illness, in 1866, at N. Bogdanov’s persuasion, he returned to the stage. In 1867, due to the deterioration of his health, he permanently ended his career. Perfect technique, especially light and high jumps, combined with elegance of movement made Aleksander Tarnowski a highly valued performer of leading roles in Polish productions of famous 19th-century ballets for two decades.
