Biography

Sonnleithner, Sonnleitner Christoph, *28 May 1734 Szeged, †25 December 1786 Vienna, Austrian lawyer and composer. He studied music with R. Birck. As a respected lawyer, he was employed at the court of Fr. Miklós József Esterházy, where he met Haydn. He served as dean of the law faculty at the University of Vienna. His daughter Anna was the mother of the poet F. Grillparzer. The compositional work of Ch. Sonnleithner includes symphonies (written for Fr. M.J. Esterházy), 36 string quartets (mostly composed for Emperor Joseph II, four published in 1802), religious music (masses, graduals, offertories).
