Biography and Literature

Novello Clara Anastasia, *10 June 1818 London, †12 III 1908 Rome, English singer (soprano) of Italian origin, daughter of Vincent. After studying in London and at the institute of A. Choron in Paris, she made her debut in 1833 in Windsor, after which she performed many times in philharmonic concerts in London. In the same year she took part in the Three Choirs Festival in Worcester. In 1837, at Mendelssohn’s invitation, she sang in the Gewandhaus hall in Leipzig. From 1839, she continued her studies in Milan. In 1841 she made her stage debut in Padua in the title role in Semiramide by G. Rossini. Then she performed in Italy, and in 1843 at Drury Lane in London.  She got married the same year. After a several-year absence, she resumed her artistic activities in 1850. Her performances in opera houses and oratorio concerts were very popular. After 1860, she retired from the stage and settled permanently in Rome. She wrote memoirs entitled Clara Novellos Reminiscences compiled by her daughter V. Gigliucci (London 1910).
