Musioł Karol, *8 March 1929 Mikulczyce (currently a district of Zabrze), †31 October 1982 Katowice, Polish librarian, Germanist, music historian. He initially studied German studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, graduating in 1954 from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań; in 1964, he obtained his doctorate from the University of Warsaw. From 1958 until the end of his life, he managed the Library of the State Higher School of Music (now the Academy of Music) in Katowice, which, thanks to him, gained a reputation as one of the best music libraries in Europe. In 1968, he founded the Silesian Music Culture Archive, whose task is to collect documentation and support research work. In 1979, he was the director of the 1st G. Fitelberg International Conducting Competition in Katowice, and from 1981 he was the vice-rector of the K. Szymanowski Academy of Music there. He was a member of the board of the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML), where he served as chairman of the committee for academic, conservatory and higher music school libraries from 1970. In recognition of his achievements, Musioł was accepted as a member of the Zentralinstitut für Mozartforschung in Salzburg and received numerous awards, including: the Chopin Medal (awarded by The Fryderyk Chopin Society, 1978), the Wagner Medal (awarded by the Bayreuth City Council, 1981), the H. Radlińska Award (for achievements in the field of librarianship, 1975), and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1979).
Musioł was the initiator of many events in the concert, academic and publishing life of Silesia. The concert series Muzyka europejska w hołdzie Chopinowi, for which Musioł was the originator and programme consultant, enjoyed great success; the concert campaign Silesia cantat, which he directed, featured the premieres of nearly 50 works by Silesian composers, both past and present. In his academic work, he focused on the following issues: theoretical and practical aspects of music librarianship, Chopin in 19th-century European music criticism, the relationship between German literature as well as Polish and Silesian music, the reception of the works of outstanding composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Telemann) in Polish culture, and prominent figures in Silesian musical culture (J. Liban from Legnica, J. Elsner, G. Fitelberg).
