Martinez, Marianne von (EN)

Biography

Martinez Marianne Anna Katharina von, *4 May 1744 Vienna, †13 December 1812 Vienna, Austrian composer of Spanish origin. Her education was overseen by P. Metastasio, who lived in the Martinez household and was a friend of her parents. From 1753, she studied under J. Haydn (piano) and N. Porpora (singing); she was likely given compositional guidance by J.A. Hasse. In 1761, she made her debut as a composer of a mass at St Michael’s Church in Vienna. In the 1780s, she organised musical evenings of great importance to Vienna’s cultural life, at which J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart and M. Kelly were frequent guests. Martinez also ran her own singing school. She was an honorary member of the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna. Her compositional output includes masses, cantatas, oratorios, psalms, motets, arias, symphonies, overtures, concertos and sonatas (the latter in particular enjoyed great popularity in Viennese salons). She possessed a rich melodic inventiveness, which, combined with a clear and compact harmonic structure, ensured the acclaim of her concertos and symphonies.
