Liebich, Ernst (III) Johann Gottlob (EN)

Biography and Literature

Liebich Ernst (III) Johann Gottlob, *25 May 1862 Wrocław, †2 February 1934 Wrocław, Silesian luthier, son and student of Ernst (II). He apprenticed in the famous Viennese luthier workshops of David Bittner and Carl Hermann Voigt. After his father’s death, he took over his workshop. He built highly valued violins, violas and cellos (6–10 pieces a year), both according to the models of Italian and southern German masters and according to his own model. His instruments with red and yellow varnish have a beautiful, full sound. He employed five collaborators, but he painted all the instruments himself. He was also known for excellent repairs (about 300 pieces passed through his hands). He received awards for his instruments many times (1881, 1895, 1911). Before World War I, he obtained the title of supplier of instruments to the ducal court of Coburg-Gotha.
