Biography

Goossens Eugène II, *28 January 1867 Bordeaux, †31 July 1958 London, son of Eugène I, English violinist and conductor of Belgian origin. In 1873, he came to England with his father but came back to Belgium to study at Collège Saint-Louis in Bruges and then at the Brussels Conservatory (1883–86) at F.A. Gavaert and Sandré (composition) and Cornélis (violin). In 1891, he entered the London Royal Academy of Music, where he studied harmony and counterpoint at F.W. Davenport; in 1893–94, he played in opera orchestras in London. In 1899–1915, he was the first conductor in the C. Rosa Opera Company, gaining a high social position in London. In 1926 he was the first conductor in the British National Opera Company. He also worked as a teacher in London for many years.
