Biography

Coenen Louis, *24 March 1856 Amsterdam, †31 January 1904 Amsterdam, Frans’s son, Dutch pianist, teacher and composer. He learned to play the violin from his father and the piano from J.H. Sikemeijer in Rotterdam. At the age of 17, he received a royal scholarship enabling him to study at the Königliche Hochschule für Musik in Berlin (1874–76). Then he improved his piano playing under F. Liszt and studied composition with W. Bargiel and F.R. Volkmann. In 1877–95, he worked in Paris, then became a piano professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Author of several compositions for piano, including Sonata in E-flat major for 4 hands and Six morceaux pour piano à deux mains.
