Biography

Chorosiński Jan, *5 November 1908 Sienno (near Radom), †6 July 1997 Warsaw, Polish educator and ethnographer. In 1932–38, he studied at the pedagogical faculty of the State Conservatory of Music in Warsaw and worked as a music teacher in junior high schools in Łuków and Jędrzejów. During the occupation, he was an organist in the parish church in Sienna and conducted secret teaching in his own house, which after the war housed the Music Centre he founded. Co-founder and inspector of music schools at the Folk Music Institute, member of the editorial committee of “Poradnik Muzyczny.” From 1946, he collaborated with the State Song and Dance Ensemble “Warszawa,” and from 1947 with the “Skolimów” ensemble. In 1957–70, he lectured on methodology and conducted teaching internships at the music education department of the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw. In 1950–54, he headed the MKiS team archiving folk music in the Kielce region. Jan Chorosiński’s passion for documentation resulted in a collection of several thousand folk and historical songs (mostly in manuscript form). He published Melodie taneczne Powiśla (Kraków 1953) and Pieśni pracy ludu kieleckiego (Kraków 1955). He was awarded, among others, the Banner of Labor 2nd class, Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Partisan Cross.
