Biography

Brodski Vadim, Avadiy, *24 April 1950 Kiev, Polish violinist of Ukrainian origin. He began learning the violin at the age of six at the music school attached to the conservatory in Kyiv, in the class of L. Bendersky. He made his debut as a soloist in 1961, performing D. Kabalevsky’s violin concerto with the symphony orchestra of the Kyiv Philharmonic under the baton of the composer. Between 1968 and 1974, he studied at the conservatory in Kiev (under O. Parkhomenko), and then continued his studies with D. Oistrakh in Moscow. In the first half of the 1980s, he obtained Polish citizenship and settled in Poland, moving to Rome in 1985. In 1974, he won fifth prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and in 1977, first prize at the 7th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań, and in 1984, he won two first prizes at the N. Paganini Competition in Genoa and the T. Varga Competition in Martigny. In 1982, he made his debut in New York and signed a contract with the Musical Heritage Society, for which he recorded, among others, violin concertos by J. Brahms, B. Bartók, N. Paganini, P. Tchaikovsky and J. Sibelius, as well as 6 Sonatas for solo violin by E. Ysaÿe. He has performed in concert halls around the world, including with the philharmonic orchestras of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, London and Warsaw, the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, the New Jersey Symphony and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. In 1986, he gave a concert at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II, and six years later he performed with the Seville Symphony Orchestra at the opening of the Teatro de la Maestranza, built for the EXPO ’92 world exhibition. In 1998, during a tour of Italy with the Simfonica di Savona ensemble, he played a violin known as “Il cannone” by G.B. Guarneri del Gesù, which once belonged to N. Paganini. He regularly collaborates with Italian television, for which he has recorded concerts by M. Bruch, L. van Beethoven, P. Tchaikovsky, N. Paganini, B. Bartók and A. Vivaldi with the RAI orchestra. He actively participates in Polish musical life, having served for many years as artistic director of the Bravo Maestro Chamber Music Festival in Kąśna Dolna and sitting on the jury of the International Contemporary Chamber Music Competition in Krakow. Since 2005, he has been teaching violin at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz.

Among Brodsky’s recordings, the following are particularly noteworthy: violin concertos by P. Tchaikovsky (1990), C. Saint-Saëns (1996), H. Wieniawski (2003), J. Sibelius and N. Paganini (2004), W.A. Mozart and J. Brahms (2006), as well as Beatles Symphony (1987, an album of The Beatles’ hits recorded with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by J. Salwarowski), Arcydzieła na skrzypce i orkiestrę, vols. 1–3 (2004), Brodski Jazz Quartet (2004, accompanied by K. Wileński, T. Kupiec and S. Wileński).
