Biography

Berganza Teresa, *16 March 1934 Madrid, †13 May 2022 San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spanish singer (mezzo-soprano). She studied at the conservatory in Madrid; in 1954 she won first prize at the university’s annual singing competition. From 1955, she performed in concerts in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Austria and West Germany. Her interpretations of songs by Spanish composers gained particular recognition. In 1957, she made her debut as an opera singer in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Aix-en-Provence festival. She is especially appreciated for her performances in operas by Mozart and Rossini. She often appeared on the stages of La Scala in Milan, the Staatsoper in Vienna, Covent Garden in London, and at festivals in Glyndebourne, Edinburgh and the Netherlands.
