Stolpe Alojzy the Elder, †30 May 1824 Warsaw, Polish pianist, teacher and conductor, probably of Swedish origin. His date of birth is unknown; all that is known is that he lived for less than 40 years. Having settled in Warsaw, he taught piano privately, from 1819 to the end of his life – in two piano classes at the conservatory, with P. Wejnert’s help. His students (from 1821) were T. Nidecki and F. Ostrowski. He conducted concerts in churches, including, on 22 November 1818 in the church of St. Anna (Bernardine Fathers). He gained great popularity as the author of polonaises. According to F. Pazdírek (Universal-Handbuch der Musikliteratur), 30 polonaises by Alojzy Stolpe the Elder were published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig.
