Biography

Nourrit Louis, *4 August 1780 Montpellier, †23 September 1831 Brunoy (near Paris), French singer. In 1802 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatory (from 1803 a student of P. Garat). In 1805, he made his debut at the Opéra de Paris as Renaud in Ch.W. Gluck’s Armide, and from 1812, he was the first tenor there. He gained particular acclaim for the title roles in Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice. He also took part in premieres of L. Cherubini’s Les Abencerages, G. Spontini’s Olimpie and, with his son Adolphe, in Rossini’s Le siège de Corinthe (1826). He reduced his stage performances at the end of 1826. According to F.-J. Fétis, Louis Nourrit was one of the great renewers of French opera singing.
