Biography and literature

Nikodemowicz Andrzej, *2 January 1925 Lviv, †28 January 2017 Lublin, Polish composer, pianist and teacher. In 1939–40, he was an organist at the Church of the Discalced Carmelites and, in 1947–50, at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Lviv. In 1942–46, he studied chemistry, among others, at the Lviv Polytechnic. He graduated in composition with A. Sołtys in 1950, and in piano with T. Majerski in 1954 at the Lviv Conservatory; he worked as a lecturer there in 1951–73 (composition, music theory and piano) and as an associate professor in 1967. He collaborated on a regular basis as a composer and pianist with the Polish People’s Theatre in Lviv and the director Z. Chrzanowski. Persecuted and dismissed from the university in 1973 for his religious beliefs, he made a living by giving private lessons until 1980; in the mid-1970s, all his recordings were deleted from the radio in Lviv. He settled in Lublin in 1980 and lectured at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and the Catholic University of Lublin; from 1995, he was a full professor and from 1989, the president of the Lublin branch of the Polish Composers’ Union, also the honorary president of the “Muzyka Kresów” Foundation. In 1982–92, he was the conductor of the choir at the Lublin Higher Seminary. He received the 3rd prize at the All-Union Composition Competition in Moscow in 1961, the St. Brother Albert Award for lifetime achievement in 1981, the President of Lublin Award in 1999, the Polish Composers’ Union Award and the Minister of Culture and National Heritage Award in 2000. Later, he received the Artistic Award of the City of Lublin in 2002, as well as the Diploma and the medal of the Holy Father John Paul II “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” in 2003. He was also awarded the title of honorary professor of the Academy of Music in Lviv in 2004, the Order of the Chapter of the Ukrainian magazine “I” “for intellectual courage” in 2005 (Lviv), and the Angelus Award (Lublin) in 2008. He became an Honorary Citizen of the City of Lublin in 2009. He was awarded the Silver Medal “For Merit to Culture Gloria Artis” in 2012. He became an Honorary Member of the Polish Composers’ Union in 2015. As a pianist, he performed his own compositions and the classical repertoire, but a hand disease prevented him from pursuing a career. He also took up sacral root carving.

Nikodemowicz was one of the leading Polish creators of sacred music. The essence of his music is the religious contemplative nature, intense emotionality, considerable density and variety of sound tissue, evolution of narrative, inspiration from the tradition of music of different eras, and domination of the language by contemporary compositional techniques. After early works with neo-romantic features (influences of K. Szymanowski and A. Scriabin), Nikodemowicz (from six small etudes 1958) began a period of interest in new directions in music, including dodecaphony and sonorism. At the same time, he made compositions (especially religious cantatas) in which he sought his own means of artistic expression, including in the field of harmony and melody. After 1980, he focused on cantata music, gradually simplifying the musical language. A significant part of Nikodemowicz’s output consists of religious pieces (nearly 40 cantatas) for various vocal ensembles (solo voices, choirs), vocal-instrumental, and sometimes instrumental. They constitute a type of non-liturgical concert music. The composer used in whole or in part the texts of medieval Polish and Latin hymns by various authors (Philippus de Grevia, Hermanus Contractus, Bernardus Claravallensis, Petrus Damiani, Hilarius or anonymous in the poetic translation by J. Gamska-Łempicka), Polish sacred folk poetry, psalms in various translations, among others religious texts (including Litania loretańska, Gorzkie żale, Magnificat, Requiem) and texts by B. Obertyńska and M. Skwarnicki. Nikodemowicz referred to medieval forms of religious music, used polyphony in combination with a free 12-note structure, operated in monumental (Laudate Dominum), medium-sized (Słysz, Boże, wołanie moje) or small-sized forms (Płacz u Grobu Chrystusa Pana). In the opinion of Rev. Prof. Ireneusz Pawlak, Nikodemowicz’s religious work prompts him to be called “compositor dolorosus.” Among his orchestral works, the monumental Symphony, Violin Concerto and its version for piano come to the fore. In the philosophical fairy tale-pantomime Szklana góra, Nikodemowicz created a synthesis of words, music, pantomime and scenography. His chamber works, which flourished in the mid-1960s, testify to his search for new sounds (preparation of instruments, use of bottles tuned with water); it is characterised by colour effects (Sonorità quasi una sonata), melodic-rhythmic richness and variety of musical ideas (Five Dialogues), expressive and textural refinement (Three Lullabies), sonoristic narrative with a wide breath (Chamber Concerto), playfulness (Concertino on Themes from M. Clementi’s Sonatina in C major). Piano pieces are characterised by a variety of textures (Three Etudes) and types of narrative (66 Expressions), a specific aura of sound (Sonorità in Three Stanzas), and contemplativeness (Four Meditations). Organ music from the 1990s often features virtuoso or meditative variations on religious themes (e.g. Ave maris Stella). Nikodemowicz is the author of theoretical works (remaining in manuscripts) on the role of instrumental music in the liturgy of the Catholic Church, the algorithm of musical form as an artistic impulse, inspiration in the composer’s work, diatonic modulation and the third-sixth method of piano tempering.
