Biography and literature

Streicher Emil, *24 April 1836 Vienna, † 9 January 1916 Vienna, a descendant of a family of German-Austrian piano builders and the son of Johann Baptist. In 1857, he joined the family business (which had by then been renamed “J. B. Streicher und Sohn”) took it over after his father’s death in 1871. Despite winning an award at the 1867 Paris Exposition for his grand piano with a cast-iron frame, he was unable to compete with other Viennese manufacturers in the following years, particularly Bösendorfer. As his son Theodor (1874–1940) showed no interest in the company, Streicher sold it in 1896 to the Viennese grand and upright piano manufacturers Gebrüder Stingl.
