Biography and Literature

Steinway, Steinweg, Theodore, Carl Friedrich Theodor, *6 November 1825 Seesen, †26 March 1889 Braunschweig, German piano builder operating in Germany and the United States, son of Henry. He learned his profession from his father. After his father and brothers left for the United States, he ran a family factory under his own name, which he moved to Wolfenbiittel in 1855; from 1858, he operated with his partner F. Grotrian. After the death of his two brothers in the United States, he sold his part of the factory in 1865 (the company Grotrian-Steinweg GmbH & Co. still operates in Brunswick) and joined his father in New York. Author of many improvements in instrument design. Together with his brother William, he built his own factory in Hamburg in 1880, which was taken over by the family company after his death.
