Sowilski Marceli Jan, *27 May 1880 Chmielnik (near Rzeszów), †9 February 1944 Warsaw, Polish Singer (tenor) and teacher. He studied at the Vienna Conservatory with F. Haböck; in 1909–21, he performed in Austria, Germany and Italy, continuing studies in Vienna (diploma in 1921). In 1921–23, he was the first tenor of the Ljubljana Opera House and, at the same time, director of the opera stadium at the conservatory. He debuted in Poland in the title role in Konrad Wallenrod by W. Żeleński in 1924 (Grand Theatre, Poznań). He was a soloist at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw in the season 1924/25 and 1926–28, he created the title role in Wagner’s Siegfried in 1925, and later also in Tannhäuser. He conducted opera classes at the Warsaw Conservatory in 1924–27. He was the guest of the Lviv Opera in 1925/26 and the Polish Theatre in Katowice in 1928. He performed in the United States in 1930 (he was there before in 1926) in the cycle of concerts (Detroit, Chicago) with Polish opera and song repertoire. He sang at the Warsaw Operetta in 1930/31 and at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow in 1932. After retiring from the stage, he ran his own Studium Śpiewu Solowego [Solo Singing Studies] (Lviv, later Warsaw). Sowilski’s wife (from 1921) was Janina Rewicz-Sowilska (1895–1979), singer (alto), teacher, and soloist of the Grand Theatre in Warsaw in 1925–36.
