Skjavetić, Schiavetto, Schiavetti, Julije, Giulio, *Šibenik (?), †after 1564, Croatian composer. He most likely worked in Dalmatia. He dedicated his book of motets to Girolamo Savorgnano, Bishop of Šibenik from 1557 to 1573, which may indicate that he remained in his service around 1564.
Skjavetić’s work is in the Dutch style and shows the influence of A. Willaert. The motets are often based on a chorale cantus firmus, which can be performed in canon, including mensural canon (in the 5-part Asperges me). In madrigals (only two of which have been preserved with all voices), which belong to the “a note nere” type, free imitation dominates. Most madrigals use texts by F. Petrarch and L. Ariosto.
