Przychodzińska Maria, married name Kaciczak, *20 March 1927 Skarżysko-Kamienna, †14 September 2019 Warsaw or Grodzisk Mazowiecki (she was undergoing treatment there periodically, finding better care than in Warsaw hospitals), Polish teacher and music theory teacher. In 1951, she graduated in law from the University of Warsaw, and in 1962, she completed her studies at the Faculty of Education of the State Higher School of Music (now the Chopin University of Music) in Warsaw. In 1967, she obtained a doctorate in music education at the University of Warsaw (supervisor: B. Suchodolski), where she also obtained her habilitation in 1978. In 1951–58, she worked at the Polish Ministry of Culture and Art, supervising the amateur artistic movement; from 1960 to 1968, she conducted choirs and taught music classes at the 3-year Teacher Training College in Warsaw; from 1968–74, as a senior lecturer, she trained music teachers at the Faculty of Education and Psychology of the University of Warsaw; from 1972–90, she worked at the Instytut Doskonalenia Nauczycieli Ministerstwa Oświaty i Wychowania [Teacher Training Institute of the Ministry of Education and Upbringing] (since 1989, Centrum Doskonalenia Nauczycieli im. W. Spasowskiego [the W. Spasowski Teacher Training Centre]) as an assistant professor and associate professor (1978–88), where she was awarded the title of professor in 1988. From 1991, she was a professor at the Faculty of Arts of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin and headed the Department of Music Education. In addition, she lectured at the Higher State School of Music in Warsaw in 1962–70 and again in 1983–91, heading the Department of Music Education Theory, and until 1993 also postgraduate studies in music education methodology for academic teachers. She also taught at the Higher School of Pedagogy in Kielce, first on a collaborative basis (1968–85) and later as a permanent employee (1988–90). She educated more than 200 master’s and six doctoral students.
Przychodzińska’s comprehensive education enabled her to focus on developing pedagogical concepts, training teachers, and conducting methodological research into music education; her innovative work had an impact on music education for children in Poland, making her an authority in the field of music pedagogy theory. Przychodzińska adapted elements of foreign systems of music education (e.g. those of Z. Kodály, Jaques-Dalcroze, and C. Orff) to Polish conditions, implementing new, empirical methods of working with children. Together with a group of colleagues, she developed a new concept of music education with a multi-faceted range of programme content and repertoire, the essence of which is the constant modernisation of programmes and textbooks, shifting from traditional singing lessons to emphasising the student’s expressive and creative performance, developing their imagination and skills, and deepening their aesthetic experiences. Przychodzińska is credited with raising the level of music education among teachers.
She was buried at Powązki Cemetery.
