Biography and literature

Philidor, Danican Philidor, born Danican, Jean, *1610 Dauphiné, †8 September 1679 Paris, French oboist. He was the progenitor of the Philidor family and appears in contemporary documents as ‘Danican dit Filidor’ (Danican called Philidor). From 1645 he served as an oboist in the corps of the royal musketeers of the Grande Écurie. Around 1654 he became a member of the Cromornes et Trompettes Marines, and around 1659 joined the Fifres et Tambours.
