Pellegrini, Vincenzo (EN)

Biography and literature

Pellegrini Vincenzo, *ca. 1562 Pesaro, †23 August1630 Milan, Italian composer. He studied in Pesaro, where he was maestro di cappella in 1582, canon in 1594, and vicar of the cathedral in 1603–04. He also remained in the service of the Duke of Urbino, visited Rome, and worked as a teacher. In 1611, he became (after G.C. Gabussi) maestro di cappella of Milan Cathedral, thanks to the recommendation of Cardinal Frederico Borromeo. He held this position until the end of his life, even though during his tenure the performance level of the cathedral choir declined to such an extent that in 1625 he was threatened with dismissal.

In his entirely sacred output, Pellegrini closely adhered to the prescriptions of the Council of Trent. His instrumental canzonas also belong to this genre. The influence of seconda pratica can only be found in his solo motets.
