Biography

Marchesi, Marchesini, Marchesino, Luigi, Lodovico, *8 August 1755 Milan, †14(?) December 1829 Inzago (near Milan), Italian singer (soprano, castrato). He studied with Caironi, the famous castrato, then with Albuzzi, tenor. His brilliant career began with his debut in Rome in 1773. He has had numerous successful performances on leading Italian stages — in Rome, Milan (from 1775), Venice (1775, 1779, 1791–1798), Naples (Teatro di San Carlo, 1778–1781), Munich (1776–77), Vienna (1779, 1785, 1798, 1801), Saint Petersburg (1785–1786), Berlin (1787) and London (1788–1790). On his journey to Russia with G. Sarti, he performed in Poland, in Warsaw in his opera Giulio Sabino on 25 August 1785. At the beginning of his career, (Rome 1773–1774) he sang women’s parts in comic operas, later created leading dramatic roles in operas by N. Jommelli, J. Mysliveček, V. Martina y Soler, and especially F. Bianchi and Sarti. From 1794 he lived and performed in Milan until he withdrew from the stage in 1806. He is the author of many arias and songs.
