Luparini Giovanni Battista, †17 March 1728 Żywiec, Italian musician and composer (mistakenly identified with Giuseppe Luparini). In 1701–02 he was a musician in the Jesuit ensemble in Krakow. In 1702 he unsuccessfully sought the post of chapel master of the ensemble of St Mary’s Church (on 27 November 1706 he married Joanna Stalau in that church). From at least 1709 until his death, he was a musician, and from at least July 1718 chapel master, in the service of Franciszek Wielopolski, starosta general of Krakow (a Polish administrative title), from 1728 voivode of Krakow, who resided in Żywiec.
The solo cantata, Luparini’s only surviving work, is a typical example of this form from the beginning of the eighteenth century. It is constructed according to a sequence of recitative and aria, except that the third aria is not preceded by a recitative, but follows directly after the second. The first aria, based on a stanza of the text, is a small da capo aria – a type of structure still rare in Polish music at that time. The next two arias show, in their modulatory scheme, a tendency towards ternary form, although melodically they are not yet clearly differentiated.
