Lubelczyk, Jakub (EN)

Lubelczyk Jakub, Polish Reformation activist, translator, and poet, active in the early second half of the 16th century. In 1558, he dedicated his edition of the psalter to Łukasz Górka, voivode of Lublin, and in 1559, he became a minister (Calvinist clergyman) in the service of M. Rej. He participated in the Synod of Wodzisław (June 1559) and in two Synods of Pińczów (January and September 1560). In the years 1560–63, he belonged to the team of translators of the so-called Brest Bible. The first dated publication of Lubelczyk’s poem is a 4-voice song from 1557, and the last is a eulogy of J. Mączyński’s Dictionary from 1564. 

Lubelczyk is the author of the first Polish (and one of the first in Europe) poetic translation of the entire psalter. He added to it 22 songs Pyosneczki s starego y z nowego Zakonu and 6 others. He included melodies for 110 psalms and 6 songs (in Psalm LXXXI, two for consecutive fragments, in Psalm CXIX, three), while for the rest he refers to the melodies of other psalms. Lubelczyk probably composed or adapted these melodies himself, although this is not clear from the phrase “my sheet music” used in the preface. It is noteworthy that the composer of almost all the polyphonic songs to Lubelczyk’s texts (published simultaneously with the Psalter) is C. Bazylik, and his initials also appear next to the tenor melody of Psalm XXXVI, which coincides with the one included in the Psalter. Many melodies from the Psalter contain motifs from older songs of various origins and from Gregorian chant.
