Kugelmann, Paul (EN)

Biography and literature

Kugelmann Paul, *Augsburg, †1580 Königsberg, German trumpeter, music publisher, and composer, brother of Johann. He probably arrived in Königsberg from Nuremberg in 1542, where he became a tubicinator and, in the years 1549–53 and 1557–80, the supervisor of Duke Albrecht’s tubicinators. He published a collection of 121 sacred and secular songs for 3–6 voices: Etliche Deutsche Liedlein…, Königsberg [1558], J. Daubmann. These are mostly arrangements of melodies also known from other sources; 92 arrangements are signed with the name of P. Kugelmann, 2 with H. Kugelmann, and 9 with Melchior Kugelmann. A unique copy preserved in Toruń (M. Kopernik Municipal Library) contains a handwritten appendix, 88 additional works of this type, four of which are signed by complier. A six-part Benedicamus by Paul Kugelmann has also been preserved in manuscript.

Two other brothers of Paul Kugelmann also worked as tubicinators at the court of Duke Albrecht: Christoph – from 1527 until his death in 1531, and Melchior – in the years 1540–1548. Paul Kugelmann’s son Barthel was the town trumpeter in Königsberg from 1567.
