Biography

Konetzni Anny, lived in Wiedmann, *12 February 1902 Ungarisch-Weisskirchen, †6 September 1968 Vienna, Austrian singer (dramatic soprano). After studying at the Vienna Conservatory with E. Schmedes, she made her debut (as a contralto) in 1925 at the Volksoper in Vienna. In 1929, she took part in performances of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen in Paris, and in 1931, she was employed at the Staatsoper in Berlin; from 1933 soloist of the Staatsoper in Vienna. In 1935, she sang the part of Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre at Covent Garden in London and Isolde at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Toscanini. She also performed in New York, Rome, La Scala in Milan and other important opera centres. In 1951, she triumphed as Elektra in R. Strauss’s opera at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival. From 1954, she taught singing at the Musikakademie in Vienna, in 1955 she withdrew from the stage and in 1957 she stopped teaching.
