Kochański Wacław, *2 May 1878 Kamieniec Podolski, †5 June 1939 Warsaw, Polish violinist and teacher. He was a student of L. Auer in St. Petersburg (where he simultaneously studied at the university’s faculty of natural sciences), J. Joachim in Berlin and, in 1903–06, O. Ševčík in Prague. Until 1914, he taught violin at the Music Institute and at the music school of H. Ottawowa and S. Kasparek in Lviv. In 1914–18, he taught at the M. Tutkowski music school in Kiev, and in 1920–21 at the conservatory in Lviv. In 1921, he went to America, where he conducted concert and teaching activities; after returning in 1923, he became a professor, and in 1937 – vice-rector of the State Conservatory of Music in Warsaw; there, in 1923-39 he taught the violin class, in 1929/30 – the chamber class, and in 1934-39 – violin literature. From 1936, he also worked at the conservatory of the Polish Musical Society in Lviv. In 1935, he participated in the jury of the 1st H. Wieniawski International Violin Competition. He often gave concerts as a soloist and member of chamber ensembles (including H. Melcer, J. Lalewicz). He also composed and wrote, among others: chamber pieces. He was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit and the Order of Polonia Restituta.
