Biography and Literature

Kapp Villem, *7 September 1913 Suure-Jaani, †24 March 1964 Tallinn, Estonian composer and teacher, nephew of Arthur, son of choral conductor Hans Kapp (1870–1938). In 1935–38 at the Tallinn Conservatory, he studied organ with A. Topman and composition with Artur Kapp (he graduated in 1944 with H. Eller). In 1944–51, he taught at the music school in Tallinn; in 1945–64, he lectured on composition and music theory at the conservatory there; in 1956 he was an associate professor, from 1957 he was the head of the composition department; his students included, among others, L. Veevo, Ü. Vinter, H. Otsa. He gained popularity in Estonia mainly thanks to his choral works and songs.
