Hellmesberger, Georg II (EN)

Biography

Hellmesberger Georg II, *27 January 1830 Vienna, †12 December 1852 Hanover, violinist, composer, and conductor, son of Georg I. Like his brother Joseph I, he was taught violin and music theory by his father at the Vienna Conservatory. He linked his short artistic career – cut short by death due to a lung disease – with the court in Hanover. After concert performances with his father and brother, he settled there in 1850 and was Konzertmeister and then Kapellmeister. He composed nine operas, two of which were staged in Hanover in 1851: Die Bürgschaft (libretto by K. von Biedenfeld after Schiller, 1848) and the comic opera Les deux Reines, Op. 100 (libretto by J.G. Seidl after F. Soulié and E. Arnould, 1851). He also composed symphonies (largely unpublished), chamber music, violin pieces, and songs.
