Hellmesberger Ferdinand, *24 January 1865 Vienna, †15 March 1940 Vienna, Cellist and conductor, son of Joseph I. He studied cello at the Vienna Conservatory, where he had been teaching the instrument since 1884. In 1879, he became a member of the Hofkapelle, and from 1883 he played in his father’s quartet. In 1886, he became a soloist in the Hofoper orchestra. In 1902, he resigned from his positions at the conservatory and the Hofoper and became the Kapellmeister at the Volksoper. From 1905 to 1910, he was a ballet conductor at the Königliche Oper in Berlin, and from 1910 he conducted orchestras in the spa towns of Baden near Vienna, Mariánské Lázně, Karlovy Vary, and Abbazia.
