Gwizdalanka Danuta, *22 June 1955 Poznań, Polish musicologist and music critic. She studied musicology (graduating in 1980) and English language and literature (graduating in 1981) at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, where she was awarded a PhD in 1990 for her thesis titled Brzmieniowe aspekty kwartetów smyczkowych Beethovena (supervisor: J. Stęszewski). Between 1981 and 1991, she taught music history and related subjects at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz (from 1981 as an assistant, and from 1991 as a lecturer); between 1979 and 1984, she also worked in the literary department of the Grand Theatre in Poznań. She has delivered papers at academic conferences in Kraków, Bydgoszcz, Poznań, Warsaw and Düsseldorf, among other places. Since 1991, she has been active in music journalism and musicological writing. In 1995, she gave a series of lectures on Polish music after 1945 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since 2020, she has hosted the programme “Złoty wiek muzyki kameralnej” on Polish Radio Chopin. She was awarded the Medal for Outstanding Contribution to the Study of the Composer’s Work by the W. Lutosławski Society (2004) and the Medal marking the 100th anniversary of Witold Lutosławski’s birth (2013). In 2021, she received the Koryfeusz Muzyki Polskiej award for her book Uwodziciel. Rzecz o Karolu Szymanowskim.
Gwizdalanka’s extensive and wide-ranging body of work includes musicological dissertations (Lutosławski, Brzmienie kwartetów smyczkowych L. van Beethovena s), interdisciplinary books (Muzyka i płeć, Muzyka i polityka), works in the field of musical lexicography (Słowniczek oznaczeń i skrótów muzycznych, reprinted over a dozen times), journalistic articles and popularisation works (Przewodnik po muzyce kameralnej), as well as textbooks, among which the four-volume, richly illustrated Historia muzyki stands out for its original, clear layout and structure. Contemporary music occupies an important place in Gwizdalanka’s academic work, including books and numerous articles devoted to W. Lutosławski. The two-volume monograph on the life and work of this composer, written with K. Meyer and taking into account the broad political and cultural context, is a work of fundamental importance. Gwizdalanka is also the author of works on chamber music, in which she conducts research on, among other things, the string quartet. Another important strand of her research is the exploration of musical themes from a gender studies perspective (including Muzyka i płeć).
In her works written between 2010 and 2023, Gwizdalanka continues to explore her research interests in the history of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century music. She addressed the subject of musical life in the 18th and 19th centuries in her book Złoty wiek muzyki kameralnej; she has also written monographs on the life and work of W.A. Mozart and M. Szymanowska. Published in 2013 in Poznań, the book Mieczysław Wajnberg. Kompozytor z trzech światów, published in Poznań in 2013, is the first Polish monograph on Wajnberg’s work. It has been translated (in expanded versions) into German (published in Wiesbaden in 2020) and Russian (published in St Petersburg in 2021). In her comprehensive monograph, Uwodziciel. Rzecz o Karolu Szymanowskim (2021), divided into 5 parts and 16 chapters, the author explores new, hitherto unexamined aspects of the composer’s life and work. In it, Gwizdalanka presents Karol Szymanowski’s biography against a historical and cultural backdrop, emphasising the composer’s relationships with his family, friends and colleagues; she characterises the composer’s personality and presents new research findings on Szymanowski’s work and its reception in Poland and internationally. The author continues the research into W. Lutosławski’s music undertaken in her earlier works in the book Witold Lutosławski, published in the “Małe Monografie” series, as well as in articles devoted to the composer’s work. In 2013, a German edition of the monograph on W. Lutosławski, co-authored with K. Meyer, was published under the title Witold Lutosławski: Wege zur Meisterschaft.
In her numerous journalistic works, Gwizdalanka explores a wide range of topics, with a particular focus on 20th-century music and chamber music. She is the author of popular science articles published in music and socio-cultural magazines, as well as programme notes for concerts, opera performances and music festivals, and liner notes for recordings. In 2013, she developed a mobile app entitled Witold Lutosławski. Przewodnik po Warszawie (Witold Lutosławski: A Guide to Warsaw).
