Biography and Literature

Ganz [ganc] Wilhelm, *6 November 1833 Mainz, †12 September 1914 London, son of Adolf, German organist, pianist, violinist and conductor, the most prominent representative of the Ganz family. He studied with his father and K. Anschütz. From 1850 he lived permanently in London. He accompanied many famous singers for several years, including a tour of England and Scotland with Jenny Lind in 1856. At the same time, he was organist at the German Lutheran Church in Strand. From 1852, he played as the second violinist with the New Philharmonic Society, and from 1874, he served as its second conductor. After H. Wylde’s resignation in 1879, he conducted concerts for three seasons, from 1880 under the name Mr Ganz’s Orchestral Concerts, presenting Berlioz’s Symphony Fantastique and Liszt’s Dante Symphony for the first time in London. He was a professor of singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for many years. In 1898, a jubilee concert in his honour took place there.
