Fodor, Josephus Andreas, *21 January 1751 or 1752 Venlo (southern Netherlands), †3 October 1828 St Petersburg, Dutch violinist and composer. He studied in Berlin under F. Benda. He gave concerts in Germany, the Netherlands, and France. From 1787 to 1794 he lived in Paris, after which he moved to St Petersburg, where he remained until his death.
Fodor’s playing was distinguished by great technical virtuosity, arousing the admiration and recognition of his contemporaries, including L. Spohr. His extensive compositional output has fallen into complete obscurity; only some of his violin duets have retained instructional value.
