Emmanuel Maurice Marie François, *2 May 1862 Bar-sur-Aube (Haute-Marne), †14 December 1938 Paris, French musicologist and composer. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Th. Dubois (harmony), L. Delibes (composition), and L.-A. Bourgault-Ducoudray (music history); in Brussels under F.A. Gevaert (history of ancient music); and at the Sorbonne, where he received his doctorate with the dissertation L’orchestique grecque (Paris, 1895). From 1907 to 1936, he taught music history at the Paris Conservatoire.
