Biography

Elschek Oskár, *16 June 1931 Bratislava, †10 January 2026 Bratislava, Slovak ethnomusicologist. From 1950 to 1954, he studied musicology and musical aesthetics at the University of Bratislava, and in 1979 he received his doctorate. Since 1954, he has worked at the Institute of Musicology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, heading the Department of Ethnomusicology since 1959. From 1963 to 1972, he served as editor-in-chief of the journal “Slovenska hudba” and as an editor of the Musikethnologische Jahresbibliographie Europas (with I. Mačák and E. Stockmann); from 1969, he has been chairman of the Czechoslovak National Committee of the International Folk Music Council. He was an organizer of national and international ethnomusicological conferences, author of numerous comparative, historical, and theoretical works on Slovak folk music, instrumentology, and the systematics of musicology.
