Biography

Drobner Mieczysław, *3 November 1912 Krakow, †17 March 1986 Łódź, Polish musicologist, teacher, composer, and conductor. In 1933 he completed composition studies under B. Wallek-Walewski and conducting studies under Z. Dymmek at the Conservatory of the Music Society in Kraków, and in 1937 he completed musicological studies with Z. Jachimecki at the Jagiellonian University. In the years 1933–34 he studied in Vienna with J. Marn. From 1931 to 1939 he was a conductor at the Krakow Opera, and from 1944 to 1946 he served as director of the Department of Music at the MKiS. From 1946 he was associated with the State Higher School of Music (PWSM) in Łódź: deputy professor, in 1949 vice-rector, in the years 1953–57 rector, and in 1957 docent. At the same time, from 1954 to 1956 he was artistic director of the Łódź Opera. From 1958 he worked at the PWSM in Krakow: from 1961 as head of the Department of Musical Acoustics, in the years 1969–72 dean of the Faculty of Composition, Theory, and Conducting, and in 1971 he was appointed professor. In the years 1958–61 he was also director of the Municipal Music Theatre in Krakow. He was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1964).
