Dąbrowska Grażyna Władysława, *28 November 1921 Warsaw, †12 May 2016 Warsaw, Polish ethnochoreologist. While working as a teacher in rural schools between 1946 and 1949, she took part in summer theatre courses and performed and danced in amateur troupes. In 1947–48 she studied at the Higher Pedagogical School in Łódź, and from 1948 she worked in Warsaw as an amateur theatre instructor and choreographer. She began her studies in ethnography in 1956 at the University of Warsaw, and graduated in 1965 from the University of Wrocław. Between 1961 and 1964, she took part in Laban-Knust kinetography courses organised by R. Lange; between 1968 and 1981, she worked at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw; in 1975, she defended her doctoral thesis, Taniec ludowy na Mazowszu [Folk Dance in Mazovia], based on detailed field research. She directed folk ensembles and performances, including the Koncerty mazowieckie [Mazovian Concerts] at the National Folk Festival in Płock from 1971 to 1973, and the Wesele kurpiowskie [Kurpie Wedding] at the European Festival Folklor ’75 (UNESCO) in Belgium; from 1972 she served as a juror at the Danube Festival in Hungary; and between 1991 and 1998 she organised a series of concerts by regional ensembles entitled Pieśń ojczystej ziemi [Song of the Homeland] at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. From 1972, she was a member of the ethnochoreological group IFMC (now ICTM), participated in numerous international symposia, and organised international symposia: in 1976 in Zaborów, and in 1994 in Skierniewice. From 1989, she served as president of the Polish Ethnochoreological Society, which she had founded on her own initiative. Dąbrowska’s academic output includes seminal works on Polish folk dances.
