Cappi, Giovanni (EN)

Biography and literature

Cappi Giovanni, *30 November 1765 Blèvio (near Como), †5 January 1815 Vienna, Austrian music publisher. He worked for the publishing firm Artaria & Company in Vienna. In 1792, he became a partner and later the brother-in-law of Carlo Artaria, but left the company after a few years. In 1801, together with his nephew Pietro Cappi, he founded his own publishing house in Vienna. He published works by contemporary composers, including Beethoven, keeping Artaria’s plate numbering whilst adding his own publisher’s mark and a new title page. In 1807, the company released the publisher’s catalogue. After Giovanni’s death, the business was run until 1821 by his widow, Magdalena Cappi, but despite holding legal power of attorney, she never acted as its proprietor.
