Bryła Bartosz, *27 June 1960 Wrocław, Polish violinist. He first learned to play the violin with A. Nowak – from the age of 6 at the State Music School, and later (until 1979) at the State Secondary Music School in Wrocław, in 1979 he studied at the W. Marschner’s class at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg im Breisgau, and then at the Academy of Music in Poznań in the class of J. Kaliszewska (graduated with honours in 1983). He has also taken master classes in music interpretation with H. Szeryng, N. Milstein, Y. Menuhin. In 1978, he made his debut at the Wrocław Philharmonic (H. Wieniawski’s Concerto in F sharp minor, Op. 14, conducted by T. Strugała) and was awarded First Prize at the National Young Violin Player Competition in Lublin. In 1981, he was awarded a distinction and a special prize for the best performance of a work by K. Szymanowski at the 8th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań, and in 1982 he was awarded the 4th prize at the L. Spohr International Violin Competition in Freiburg im Breisgau.
As a chamber musician, Bryła has worked with such ensembles as Camerata Vistula, Collegium Viridimontanum, Wratislavia chamber orchestra, Jorga Quartet, and performed in a duo with pianist A. Tatarski (CD with works by H. and J. Wieniawski, including the first world recording of the Violin Sonata, Op. 24 by J. Wieniawski, Selene 1997). Since 1986, Bryła has been a member of “Chopin Trio”, which was awarded with Special Prize for the Best Performance of W. A. Mozart’s Composition at the Colmar Competition. Moreover, this ensemble recorded Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Warsaw Sinfonietta under W. Czepiel (Arston 1987), trios by J. Haydn and W.A. Mozart (Poljazz 1988), trios by Beethoven, Chopin, Ravel (Poljazz 1989). He performed in many European countries, such as, United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, China, and the United Arab Emirates. His repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary works. He has made numerous recordings for the Polskie Radio, including the first ever recording of K. Lipiński’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in F sharp minor with the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra conducted by J. Salwarowski.
Since 1997, Bryła has taught violin at the Academy of Music in Wrocław, and from 2006 he is working as a professor in the class of violin at the Academy of Music in Poznań. He has conducted master classes in Poland, Austria, Spain, United States, Mexico, and China. Bartosz Bryła has sat on the jury of national and international violin, chamber music and violin-making competitions in Lublin, Gdańsk, Warsaw, Poznań, Wrocław, Zell an der Pram, Brescia, and Hinterzarten. Since 2007 he is a Chairman of Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań.
