Biography

Brambilla Marietta, *6 June 1807 Cassano d’Adda (near Milan), †6 November 1875 Milan, Italian singer (contralto), the eldest of the five singer-sisters. In 1827, she made her London debut as Arsace in Rossini’s Semiramide and performed there for several years. She sang on Italian stages, as well as in Paris (1834–1848) and Vienna (1837–1841). She was a mediocre actress, but her beautiful voice and style of interpretation, combined with her uncommon beauty and charm, allowed her to be successful everywhere. In her later years she became a prominent teacher and also published the highly regarded Esercizi e vocalizzi.
