Biography

Bok Józef, *28 III 1928 Chorzów, †2008?, Polish conductor and teacher. Between 1950 and 1954, he studied conducting at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow under W. Krzemieński and B. Wodiczka. Bok’s conducting career: between 1950 and 1953, he was assistant choir conductor; between 1953 and 1964, he was artistic director and conductor of the Krakow Philharmonic Choir; from 1953 to 1956, he was the director of the Song and Dance Ensemble in Nowa Huta; from 1964 to 1971, he was the choir director at the Grand Theatre, and from 1971, at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. Teaching career: from 1958 to 1965 at the State Higher School of Music in Krakow (from 1963 as an associate professor); from 1965, associate professor at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw. In 1961, he toured Italy with the Krakow Philharmonic Choir, and in 1962 he participated in the Sagra Musicale Umbra festival in Perugia. In 1967, he received the Ministry of Culture and Art Award for his teaching activities and the Gold Cross of Merit, and in 1968, the Distinguished Cultural Activist badge.
