Biography

Białecki Wojciech, Albertus Weiss, †1726 Królewiec, Polish monk. He converted to Lutheranism and was active in East Prussia. Before 1726, he served as cantor at the Polish Church of St Nicholas in Königsberg and as cantor at the Polish school. He translated the texts of German Protestant hymns for Polish Evangelicals, publishing them in Polish hymnals of the time, including the Königsberg hymnal of 1708. Białecki is also regarded as a composer of Polish Protestant hymns. In 1713, he published a written critique of the collection Nowo Wydany Kancyonal, albo Pieśni na chwałę Boga w Troycy S. iedynego (Königsberg 1708, printed by F. Reussner’s “Dziedzic” press; the new edition of the Königsberg hymnbook from 1684 was edited by J.J. Graeber), which sparked widespread controversy among the local clergy and prompted the intervention of the Prussian authorities (King Frederick William I’s decree of 1719 regarding amendments and additions to this hymnal) and led to a new edition in 1723.
