Biography

Bampton Rose, *28 November 1909 Cleveland, †21 August 2007 Bryn Mawr, American singer (dramatic soprano). She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and Drake University in Des Moines; she made her debut in 1929, singing the mezzo-soprano part of Siebel in Charles Gounod’s Faust in Chautauqua (the state of New York). In 1932, she appeared for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera House as Laura in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda. From 1936, she sang soprano parts and gained fame in this repertoire (Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, parts in Wagner’s dramas). She was a soloist at the Metropolitan Opera House until 1950; she also performed at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires (1942–47) and at Covent Garden in London (1937). She took part in the American premiere of Schönberg’s Gurrelieder conducted by L. Stokowski (1932). From 1963, she taught at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. She made a number of recordings with A. Toscanini.
